Taking a Trip by Rosalind Taylor, aged 8

Rosie, Beth and their mummy and daddy lived in a normal house with four windows and a door. Next door, though, lived Mr. Pigletin whose house was red and made of metal. Nobody ever dared knock on his door or set foot in his garden. Mr. Pigletin was a huge, fat, angry person, who was half-man, half-pig, and who always sat at his computer typing, but nobody ever knew what he was typing. He said to himself, “My master plan is to rule the world and every other world too! Ha ha ha!”

One day, when Rosie and Beth were four, they had to go to school. On the way, they had to walk past Mr. Pigletin’s house. They felt very scared. Beth said to Rosie, “I wonder what would happen if we knocked on his door? Would he be angry or happy to see us? Nobody has ever met him.”

Rosie answered, “I don’t actually know. Perhaps he’s lonely.”

So Beth and Rosie slowly crept up to Mr. Pigletin’s house and knocked on the door.

Mr. Pigletin opened the door, to see if it was the post. When he saw it wasn’t, he was very angry.

Behind Mr. Pigletin in the hallway, Beth and Rosie saw a magic portal. It glowed and sparkled. But before they could see anything else, Mr. Pigletin slammed the door in their faces. BANG.

That night-time, Beth and Rosie crept out of their house and found an open window in Mr. Pigletin’s house. They climbed through the window and into the hallway. There, in front of them, was the portal, still glowing in the darkness.

For a few minutes, they thought about what they should do. Then they decided they would go through the portal. They stepped inside. Inside the portal, they found a huge machine that could suck up the whole world in a second, like a gigantic vacuum cleaner. It had a big funnel at one end.

Then with horror, they realised that Mr. Pigletin was there, in front of the machine. He was just about to press the “On” button that would suck up the whole world.

            Then he did.

But just at that moment, Beth leapt forwards and pushed Mr. Pigletin into the funnel. He was so fat, he blocked the machine!

The machine started to moan and fizz. Rosie shouted, “It’s going to blow up!”

So Rosie and Beth jumped back out of the portal into Mr. Pigletin’s house.

There was a big explosion, and the portal shut.

They felt very happy, because they had saved the world, and Mr. Pigletin was shut out of this world forever. His house was turned into a museum and a playground for the children.

But perhaps somewhere, Mr. Pigletin was still alive and working on a new masterplan!
