The Suitcase Kid by Jacqueline Wilson

‘The Suitcase Kid,’ written by Jacqueline Wilson and illustrated by Nick Sharratt is a very imaginative book. The theme is: ‘what it is like for a child to be between two warring parents who are divorced!’

Andy is a ten year old girl, whose parents are divorced!  Dad lives with: Carrie, Zen and Crystal. So, Mum lives with: Bill the Baboon, King-Size- Rat- Katie, Graham and Paula. But, where does Andy live? She lives outside of a suitcase! She stays at Dad’s for one week and at Mum’s for another week too. All she wants to do is to go back to her old house at Mulberry Cottage, with: Mum, Dad and Radish-her toy rabbit. Do you think they will?

Jacqueline Wilson has a good experience of this theme because her Mum and Dad were also divorced, (although this was when she was a bit older than Andy.)  Her Mum and Dad used to row a lot and when they did, Jacqueline used to go into her bedroom.

When she was in her bedroom (to block the horrible noise of her parents arguing,) she used to write stories. This inspired her to be a writer.

In the story, Katie, (Andy’s stepsister) calls her ‘Andy Pandy’ but in revenge Andy calls her a ‘Spoilt Brat and a King-Size- Rat!’

If you like stories that are hilarious, then this is the book for you!

If a character talking to toys annoys you, then you should try to avoid this like the plague!

I would recommend this book to ages 9/12. My rating out of 10 would have to be 10/10 because this is a very touching, imaginative and very well written story.

“An all-time Jacqueline Wilson favourite, now with an extra-special new introduction!”
